Harry Potter has attracted more scholars to pursue serious literary analysis. Some scholars suggest Harry Potter as a mean to teach students. Wallace and Pugh (2007) suggest teachers to use Harry Potter to walk the line between play and work with their students, encouraging them to engage with cultural constructions of social class, gender, sexuality, and race (p. 97). Furthermore, a journal written by Tisha Beaton shows how the Potter books can be used in a curriculum that integrates math, science, and language arts (as cited in Wallace & Pugh, 2007, p. 97). Another researcher, Fields (2007) observes to utilize Harry Potter as a teaching tool for introductory sociology courses (p. 167). From those researchers, it can be concluded that its popularity is not only in the field of book selling, but also in the field of education.

The main data are taken from J.K Rowling’s novels with the titles Harry Potter and The philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret, and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. The secondary data are taken from previous research, some books such as books written by Freud, journals and internet sources. Some books which have the same subject matter are also taken into consideration. Since the data are gathered from many reliable resources, this technique of collecting data is called documentation. Documents means that the researcher is expected to read, understand and critically analyze the writing of others whether fellow researches, practitioners, or policymakers (Blaxter et al, 1996:150). This way of collecting data lets the researcher to allocate the time by reading several books and grouping the relevant data which are found. In this thesis, the data are the conversation, text, and other narrative data from the drama.

This three novel, at the end of 2001, has been sold 35 million copies in 35 languages and she earns $ 480 million.

Lalu Draco pun bersiap untuk membunuh Dumbledore, ketika Dumbledore tiba dan Draco berhasil menemukannya dan melucuti Harry dengan segera Snape menghalangi Draco dan membunuh Dumbledore dengan sihir tak termaafkan. Dumbledore tewas seketika , Harry yang tidak mengetahui rencana Dumbledore dan Snape langsung menuduh bahwa Snape adalah penghianat. Setelah itu Snape dan Draco kabur bersama Voldemort dan Pelahap Maut lainnya.

Untuk membedakan tanda yang dipelajari oleh semiotika dari tanda “sejati” sebagaimana dipelajari dalam linguistik, dipakailah istilah sign- function. Dalam praktiknya, dalam analisis semiotik tetap dipakai istilah tanda (sign), sehingga orang melupakan bahwa objek itu sebenarnya bukan tanda melainkan sebuah nilai guna atau fungsi. Mengapa kita bisa meloncat dari objek sebagai nilai guna ke objek sebagai tanda? Mengapa topi yang semula untuk melindungi kepala dari terik matahari berubah menjadi tanda gaya hidup (lifestyle)? Mengapa pula sebuah keluarga makan di restoran karena sedang ditinggal pembantunya, mudik lebaran, ditafsirkan sebagai tanda gaya hidup kelas menengah? Mengapa sepeda yang semula mempunyai nilai guna untuk berolah raga menjadi tanda gaya hidup? Mengapa juga kaum muda kita harus repot-repot antri semalam suntuk untuk memperoleh buku seri Harry Potter terbaru berubah menjadi budaya-pop? Serangkaian pertanyaan ini tentu sudah menyentuh persoalan antropologis- filosofis tentang status tanda dalam hidup manusia. Memang, suatu hal yang penting dalam lapangan semiotika, lapangan sistem tanda, adalah pengertian tanda itu sendiri. Dalam pengertian tanda, ada dua prinsip, yaitu penanda (signifier) atau yang menandai, yang merupakan bentuk tanda, dan petanda (signified) atau yang ditandai, yang merupakan arti tanda.
