Question Answer Coding Description Would you tell Since elementary school I studied me your in Semarang until university. education Actually I don‟t really remember background? before elementary school, but my family said that I‟m a little naughty and just playing round with my friends. How about your I started study English at English elementary school. I took English language course outside school time, they‟re background? quite good because they use native speakers as teachers.

In total, how I‟m not sure, maybe it‟s about eight long have you years? been learning English until now? Approximately,

Maybe it‟s about three hours a how many hours week. One and half at school and in a week? one and half at course. reading textbooks, because they‟re all in English and in daily life I don‟t use English to have a conversation with my friends.

How about the motivation to become an exchange student? Actually at first I‟m not sure to become an exchange student but a lot of people, even my professor at university, said that if you join this exchange student program, you can develop yourself, you can be a better person with a wider vision, and you can get a lot of friends from all over the world, and I heard that Indonesia in 2015 will have an open market and you can find jobs in Southeast Asia, so I think it‟s better if I have an experience to be an exchange student. Is it more about other people‟s encouragement or do you have your own motivation?

At first it‟s about other people‟s encouragement because I don‟t really know about exchange student, but after I came here I think it‟s really important to become an exchange student because it will develop your soft skill and also you can get a lot of new friends. Would you tell me about your perception? What do you think about learning Chinese Actually I want to learn Chinese via Indonesian language but they don‟t have it. They don‟t provide it. So I have to take the Chinese language class via English language. My teacher in class speaks Chinese most of the time, so

1  (1) Subject A stated his dissatisfaction toward task situation.

 (1) Subject A focuses on his too good, so I don‟t know some vocab. Ok. What do you think about the role of English language in learning Chinese language?

Actually I think English language is quite good to be a way to learn Chinese language because almost everyone knows English..

2 How about the role of English in learning Chinese that you‟re experiencing now? It really helps me to learn Chinese because the book is printed with English translation so it really helps me now, also after I studied Chinese via English, not only my Chinese is getting better but also my English is getting better I think, because I have to use English also.

2  (2) Subject A felt that English language is useful because his Chinese language textbook is printed with English translation.

How about the obstacles, the hard things that you face in learning Chinese language via English language? Like I‟ve told you, that my English is not too good I think, so I don‟t know some vocab. So when my teacher explain the Chinese in English, I still don‟t know what is that, so I still have to find in dictionary, but not too many words. So I think English really help me and not so many obstacles I face.

  1, 2, 3  (1) Subject A stated his lack of English skill again.

 (2) Subject A stated that English language helped his study.

 (3) Subject A perceived that the obstacle is you to learn Chinese language via English language? listen to people because they don‟t have the letters. But if we have to write or read the Chinese characters, called hanzi

, they don‟t have the same character with English so

it‟s quite hard because I

have to remember the lines. But if I have to listen or speak, it‟s easier for me. is fine with learning speaking or listening skill but found that writing or reading skill is quite hard

And if you make the difficulty into numbers, from 1 very easy, to 10 very difficult, what would it be?

If only about speaking and listening, I think 7.5. If about writing and reading, it is 4. Overall, I think it would be 6.

  4  (4) Subject A‟s self-report score on difficulty perception (Magnitude).

Ok. About this experience, learning Chinese language via English language, does this experience gives you the feeling of having the ability to do other things successfully?

I... I don‟t think so, but I think it helps me. Because from experiencing this I think I can learn new things. It just encourage me to learn new things. But the Chinese language itself I think it‟s not really related.
